Late Feb 2014 EIA: Retail vs. Wholesale Propane Prices

We used the late February EIA residential propane price data to perform some calculations for our website visitors to review. The calculations focused on the differential between residential retail propane prices vs. wholesale propane price changes for the week between February 24, 2014 and March 3, 2014. Note that not all states offer both residential retail propane price data and wholesale propane price data. Therefore, we performed calculations on states where the EIA offered both retail and wholesale propane price survey information.

The states included in our calculations included the United States Average, and individual states including NJ, NY, PA, NC, VA, IN, IA, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD and WI. We simply calculated the difference of the change to both retail propane prices and wholesale propane prices to view the differential of the movement for both retail vs. wholesale propane prices/gal for the one week period between 2/24/14 and 3/3/14. The retail data used was identified by the EIA as residential retail propane prices collected during recent surveys.

In all cases, both the residential retail propane price per gallon and the wholesale propane price per gallon decreased for the time period noted above. The results, which are rounded to the closest penny, include the following.

  • US Average: Wholesale propane price down 33 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 17 cents/gal.

  • NJ: Wholesale propane price down 23 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 1/2 cent/gal.

  • NY: Wholesale propane price down 36 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 1 cent/gal.

  • PA: Wholesale propane price down 29 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 5 cents/gal.

  • NC: Wholesale propane price down 37 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 16 cents/gal.

  • VA: Wholesale propane price down 21 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 10 cents/gal.

  • IN: Wholesale propane price down 33 cents/gal, Retail propane price down 22 cent/gal.
